Denmark 2008 – Århus Domkirche

Århus (or Aarhus if you’re not able to find the Å key) is home to the tallest, and longest cathedral in Denmark. As well as decorating the doors outside…

…the doors inside are decorated too.

Denmark didn’t suffer from iconoclasm too much, so you can find items like this lovely altar piece.

This model boat floated to shore, when the Dutch ship carrying it to Russia sank.

I was rather taken by this modern organ.

The pastel wall paintings are the medieval equivalent of a ‘Jackie photo-story’…

…albeit with religious themes!

Here are some souls…

…Jesus and some notables…

…a judgement…

…and this lovely, snub-nosed mermaid.

I have no idea why St Clement became the patron saint of sailors, as he drowned (held down by the anchor).

Now I can identify this as St Michael – doing a bit of soul weighing…

…but what in all creation is THIS?

My favourite? St George…now I’d always assumed that dragons are/were reptiles, but this one has breasts. This means it’s a Mummy dragon, needing the odd Princess to feed her young one…

…who is rather cute. BOO to St George!!
